The European oak case, opened
Why red?
The Macallan was founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, whose surname means "the red one" in Scots. In 1903 the Choice Old range went out in cases printed in red, and in 1980 the oldest vintages of the day were tied with a red ribbon to mark their age. The Red Collection, launched with Sotheby's in October 2020, gathers six of the oldest whiskies The Macallan has bottled — 40, 50, 60, 71, 74 and 78 years old — and the 78 is the oldest of them all.

Seventy-eight years in sherry-seasoned oak, bottled in 2020 at 42.2% with no colour added. Each bottle is hand-signed by Sarah Burgess, The Macallan's Lead Whisky Maker. Each case is built from the same European oak The Macallan uses for its casks and upholstered in soft red leather from Bridge of Weir in Scotland.

Serving notes
If it is ever opened: neat, at room temperature, in a tulip-shaped nosing glass. Pour 15–20ml and let it sit for several minutes before tasting; at 42.2% it needs no water, though a single drop can open the fruit. Keep the bottle upright, cool and out of direct sunlight. Whisky does not keep maturing once bottled, so a sealed bottle will not change with the years.
